Jim Parrott

Jim Parrott has been working to advance LGBTQ rights ever since he walked into the first meeting of the Waterloo Universities Gay Liberation Movement on March 8, 1971.

Jim Parrott

Librarian, activist, and community leader, Jim Parrott worked as a professional librarian at the University of Waterloo from 1970 to 2007.

For over 50 years, he has been a dedicated activist for the local 2SLGBTQ community. Jim was deeply involved with the UW group GLOW from 1971 to 1981 and again from 1991 to 2001.

In 1992, he initiated GLOW’s first discussion group and served as a facilitator for the next nine years. Jim played a significant role in the local Pride Committee during its formative years from 1996 to 2000.

He is also the editor of the Grand River Rainbow Historical Project, which started in 2011. This project aims to document and preserve the rich history of the 2SLGBTQ community in the Grand River area.

Since the founding of SPECTRUM – Waterloo Region’s Rainbow Community Space in 2012, Jim has been actively involved in its activities. He served as the Executive Director of SPECTRUM from 2014 to 2021 and has been a facilitator for various SPECTRUM groups from 2013 to the present. His leadership and dedication have been instrumental in providing a safe and supportive space for the 2SLGBTQ community in the Waterloo Region.

Jim and his husband, William, have been visible symbols of 2SLGBTQ pride, often seen strolling hand-in-hand throughout the Waterloo Region. Their public displays of affection have challenged societal norms and provided representation for those who might not have access to such visibility.

Jim Parrott’s lifelong dedication to activism and community service has made a lasting impact on the 2SLGBTQ community in Waterloo. His efforts in education, advocacy, and support are truly commendable.

We are proud to honour Jim and welcome him to the Canadian Wall of Honour, celebrating his invaluable contributions and relentless pursuit of equality and acceptance.
